City Tacos - North Park & more
Ok, so I’m a sucker for churros, and City Tacos offers some good looking churros.
My problem with ordering churros is they prevent me from trying all the tacos.
Trust me, this menu is so incredibly diverse that you won’t find a favorite that you can remain loyal to.
If this menu represented a dating pool of fine candidates, a lot of people would be in a lot of trouble.
From seafood to pulled pork and skirt steak, there’s not a bad offering in the bunch.
Vegetarians and vegans will also do well here, with street corn, squash blossom, and mushrooms galore.
I’m guessing this crew cooks up a sick quesadilla for your small fry, so don’t leave the kids at home either!
Locations in North Park, La Mesa, Imperial Beach, Encinitas, Sorrento Valley, Pacific Beach, Ballpark, and, even, USC!
Crack Taco Shop – Mission Valley
The “Crack” in this Taco Shops name refers to the local beef cut - known as tri-tip to Californians - that is specially prepared by Seaside Market in Cardiff by the Sea using their super secret Burgundy Pepper marinade which locals affectionately call "Cardiff Crack".
Or so they say.
Perhaps, methinks the crack might foreshadow an addiction that can happen once these tasty taco treats are consumed.
Right now, if you spend $25, you immediately get 2 free churros.
Potato tacos?
Check.
Cactus taco?
Oh, Yes.
Fresh Mex bowl for carb avoiders?
Absolutely.
The meat is perfection and the seafood can be battered, grilled, or shrimp-ed.
Open late seven days a week, they also sell micheladas and chiladas for the 21+ crowd.
Street corn and spicy carrots!
Odelay to the happy dance!
Lucha Libre Taco Shop - Mission Hills
With a namesake honoring Mexican wrestling, and decor to match, the food lives up to the play.
Walking in, framed photographs of men in traditional wrestling masks greet you.
This is the stuff of teenage dreams.
Just for kicks, book the Champion Ring booth, a reserved table set on a mini wrestling ring with a working microphone for service.
This little taco shop that could opened in 2008 in Mission Hills and now has another location in North Park and the Sycuan Casino.
Surf and turf your tacos or try the Ado-Haba burrito which pairs Adobada pork with grilled pineapple and habanero.
Do not finish your order without adding on the TJ Corn. Nobody doesn’t like TJ Corn, silly.
And nobody does silly like Lucha Libre, seriously.
Locations - Mission Hills, North Park, Sycuan Casino
¡Salud! – Barrio Logan
¡Salud!
The King of all Tacos rocks a super cool chicano punk vibe.
Mentioned in the press and featured on Food Network by Andrew Zimmern, ¡Salud! has the fine distinction of being a class act.
Tattoo art combined with Mexican heritage–the place is always packed for a reason.
Barrio Logan, the neighborhood, has made a great name for itself in honoring the authenticity of Mexico within the border of San Diego.
¡Salud! makes it that much better and has rounded out the cool vibe by opening the music venue next door, the Corazon Del Barrio.
That’s “heart of the ‘hood” in case you don’t already know.
Not Not Tacos – Little Italy
Little Italy’s food hall has a stall called Not Not Tacos.
Nestled within the 10,000 square foot open air piazza (along with six other vendors) you can find the kernel of taco genius created by Sam the Cooking Guy.
When Mac and Cheese gets a position somewhere in a tortilla with pulled pork, who are we to say this pairing is “not” a taco?
Hell yes, it is, and it’s good, man!
Here’s the kicker:
San Diego’s got a ton of great taco places, but let’s be honest, a corn tortilla can wrap around Korean short-rib without a question mark.
And it can embrace some hot pastrami with a fried egg in that business, no problem.
Sound sketchy?
No, sounds like good clean taco fun well done in the San Diego sun.
Cocina35 - Downtown
With a waitlist over an hour long on busy days, it’s no wonder they joyfully insist you join the list, which you can do online during the drive over.
Twenty minutes later, hop to your table like a pro diner and get your tacos on.
Or, chilaquiles.
Because chilaquiles done a dozen different ways is what they do best here.
Creamy sauces packed with cilantro, chipotle, or habanero will make your mouth sing and pucker at the same time.
And that’s exactly what you want.
With a lime, too, yeah.
Check Los Gringos portion of the menu for your friend who must absolutely have breakfast that’s on the American side of the border.
They’ll be happy too.
Locations - Downtown, Otay Mesa, and Liberty Station
Tuetano Taqueria - Oldtown
Bone marrow style lollipop.
The caveman gods heard the request.
Yes, blessed be, get one, get two.
Take a picture.
Pro-tip: In order to understand the menu, you must know what birria is.
Birria is meat that has been stewed, and then the corn tortillas are pan fried in the same juices as the meat to give them more flavor and color.
So, birria can signify a type of stew from any region in Mexico.
OR,
it can alternatively signify the fact your tortilla’s been cooked in some mighty fine pan juices.
Just relax if you see a word all over a menu you may not know, and understand you are in for some good nom noms.
Lola 55 – East Village
No food guide would be complete without a nod to a Michelin nod.
Here is where you can get the squash blossom relleno and baby carrot adobada.
Pazole just like somebody’s abuela makes topped with fancy slices of gorgeous watermelon radish.
Smart menus feature both pork and cauliflower dishes right now, and this one is also affordable.
The decor features clean lines and loads of outdoor seating for best eating.
If churros aren’t your go-to dessert, Lola 55 steps it up with chocolate mole ice cream.
The cocktail menu features fully loaded drinks with catchy names like Chet Baker or the Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.
Finish with the Apocalypto before you vamoose.
Puesto – Embarcadero
“Trophy tacos, perfect margaritas”.
That’s what the words on the door say.
20 million tacos sold in ten years is plenty proof this family owned business has got it going on.
Puesto, which means “taco stand” in Spanish, also received Michelin recognition in 2019.
They received this award for stand-outs like lamb barbacoa, short rib quesabirria, braised seasonal mushrooms, four varieties of guacamole and blue corn tortillas made fresh all day at each location.
Since 2013, the filet mignon taco has been the bestseller, but the Chicken al Pastor taco runs a very close second.
With two kinds of ceviche, and dessert like chocolate chip bread pudding, dining here is a real treat.
Locations - Embarcadero and Mission Valley
